3D Painting in Procreate is unlike anything youâve done so far. Learn how to design your own textures and materials and start creating 3D models that you can check out in your own apartment without any rendering!
In version 5.2, Procreate introduced a game-changing feature - Live 3D painting. And right now is the perfect time to hop on board and learn how to paint in a three-dimensional space.
Bring your art from a plane to space and learn how to create your own textures and materials, where possibilities are (nearly) endless! Play with terrazzo, concrete and marble brushes to cover 3D models in your designs and create original furniture, plants, tile patterns and more.
This is the first time creating in 3D has been simplified to the point where almost anyone can do it and Procreate has done a great job doing so. No hard to master 3D modelling software, you simply import a 3D model into the app and start painting all over it in seconds.
In addition to that, Procreate doesnât require rendering for every change you make. Within the app, everything is live and ready for high-quality export!
This is mind-blowing! I thought the Masterclass was the cap of my Procreate skills, but listening to Freya and following her lead I learned how to paint in 3D and see it in "real life" with the help of AR (which I still don't completely understand)!
If you told me last week I'll be able to paint that in my 50's, I'd probably laugh in your face. But following Freya, it's really as simple as it gets! This 3D painting really opens up so many new possibilities. It's crazy how you can place the painted model in AR and see it through the camera. I can spend hours painting in 3D, it's just so fun! And it looks much more difficult than it acutally is thanks to this course.
The 3D painting feature in Procreate enables you to make perfect visualisations of various products, furniture, wall art, architectural structures and even plants.
Once you create the desired material, you can make a 3D model look almost completely lifelike. And whatâs even more impressive - you can export it and send it to your clients via Facebook messenger, WhatsApp or even email. They can open and view it through their iPhone or iPadâs camera in AR right there in their living room, office or outside!
3DÂ painting is a skill that can come in extra handy and set you apart from your competition. If youâre a digital illustrator or a graphic designer youâll have an edge in landing interesting jobs with clients in architecture, product design, or interior design.
3D painting in Procreate introduces a whole new dimension (pun intended) to digital illustration. Once you paint your own texture or design on a 3D model, you can check it out in augmented reality with your Apple deviceâs camera and see what it would look like in real life.

Iâve worked as a professional illustrator for over 15 years, doing most of my recent client work exclusively in Procreate. It just offers so much as opposed to other software or doing your illustration on a piece of paper or canvas.
Donât get me wrong, just like any other artist, I love creating with real brushes on real canvas. But when doing client work where everyone needs digital illustration, doing it in an analogue way is just too time consuming.
Now, even though 3D painting in Procreate is a brand new feature, Iâve spent thousands of hours creating in the app and I pretty much know it inside out. This helped me figure out the 3D painting extremely quick and to the point where Iâm confident teaching other people as well.Â
Iâve crafted a well thought out lesson progression, where we start with the 3D basics, lightings, key settings for creating textures and materials and gradually move onto exercises where youâll put it all into practice.
As with all my courses, I did my best to include as many practical exercises as possible. I get that thereâs really no better way to learn but to do it on your own (with me guiding you, of course).

Every artist once started as an apprentice learning the tools of the trade, so thatâs where youâll start, too. Getting models that work with Procreate out of the box is quite tricky as the feature is so new. As demonstrated in the video below, the UV mapping of the models you can buy and download on the 3D model libraries online is not configured to be Procreate compatible in most cases. You'll sometimes encounter difficulties such as incomplete color fills, messy lines etc. while using any of the Procreate painting tools.
