Hello and welcome to this free tutorial! Today we'll be working on this Hydrangea Tutorial made using the sampler brushes from my Ultimate Watercolor Brushset! Please download the tutorial files first. You'll get the sampler brushes, tutorial PDF, swatches, and sketch for this project. Watch and pause the video as needed while we draw together.
Step 1: Let's start by creating a sketch of our composition using a 6B or a peppermint brush. Lower the opacity of the layer, rename it as sketch and lock it.
Add the paper texture background using Freya Paper Texture No. 4 in a light gray color. Move it under the sketch layer and lock it. In another layer, add the base colors using Freya Wet on Wet No. 6.
Step 2: On separate layers, start blending colors using Freya Wet on Dry No. 4. To create the leaf gradient, do not lift the brush while making half circle strokes.
Step 3: Add shadows and highlights using Freya Wet on Dry No. 4 brush. Create the background using Freya Wet on Wet No. 6 and Freya Blender Wash No. 2.
Step 4: Add more details using the Freya Dry on Dry No. 5 and Freya Blender Wash No. 2. Add the leaf details in a lighter color. For the background details, draw light-colored petals using Freya Dry on Dry No. 5.
Well done! You've just finished painting a Watercolor Hydrangea using my Ultimate Watercolor Brush Set! Please don't forget to tag me if you post your version online! I would love to share it with the rest of our community!
