How to Paint Iridescent Seashell in Procreate: An Oil Brush Tutorial

Download the files here

Hello and welcome to another free tutorial!

Please make sure you're on your iPad when you download the tutorial files It should automatically download and you’ll find the zip file in your Files App’s downlaod folder. Tap on the zip icon and it will open a new blue folder. Open that folder and you’ll find the .brushset file, .swatches file and the sketch image we’ll use for this project.

Just tap on the .brushset and .swatches file and it should import automatically to Procreate. You’ll find it in the Palettes tab of your Color Panel. The brushes will be on top of the list in your Brush Library. Save the sketch file to your Photos app. Open Procreate and from the gallery, look to the upper right corner and tap on Photo. Tap on the sketch file and it will import to Procreate as a new canvas.

Step 1: Create your outline shape using shape using the 6B Pencil. If you’re using the the transparent sketch, just change the layer mode to multiply and lower the opacity. Then add a new layer place it under the sketch layer,  rename it as base color. Then trace the outline of the seashell using the default technical pen brush and make sure there aren’t any gaps in the outline. Choose a light gray color and fill the shape with color.

Step 2: Add a new layer on top of the base color layer, and set this new layer a Clipping Mask.

Step 3: Go to Adjustments > Noise > Clouds. Set the scale to 80%, Octaves to 50% and Turbulence to 30%. When you tap on the screen, don’t lift the Pencil right away, instead move it left to right and adjust the noise percentage. I used 25% but this might look different for you, so try to experiment with the percentages.

Step 4: When you’re happy with how it looks. Tap on Adjustments again, and tap choose Liquify. Choose the Push option and then swirl in a clockwise motion moving inward to the center.

Step 5: Still working on the same layer, go to Adjustments and apply Chromatic Aberration. Choose the Displace option. And then tap on the canvas and move your pencil. This will add the pretty iridescent colors. After that, go to Adjustments again, and use Bloom. Tap on the canvas and move hte pencil left and right to adjust how it looks. This will lighten certain colors, you can play around with the settings until you’re happy with how it looks. At this point, turn off the sketch layer.

Step 6: Use the Freya Oil Dry No.5 to add the details. Add 3 new clipping mask layers. One for midtones, one for highlights, and one shadow. Pick out the color tones based on the dominant colors you see from the color aberration. So there would typically be a bit of lilac, some dark blue and light blue. Set the shadow layer to multiply so that the details still show through. Add the darker color to areas on areas that typically overlap.

Step 7: On the highlight layer, add white strokes on the ridges to emphasize the ridges even more.

Step 8: Add another clipping mask layer, set it to Hard Light mode. Add light colors around the spiral. And you’re done! The great thing about this tutorial is that it can look different each time, just like how nature intended. So feel free to play around with the settings.
