How to Paint a Peony with Oil Brushes on Procreate

Download the files here

Hello, in today's tutorial we'll paint a realistic looking oil painting using some of my Freya Oil Brushes. Download the tutorial files and make sure you're on your iPad when you download the tutorial files It should automatically download and you’ll find the zip file in your Files App’s download folder.

Tap on the zip icon and it will open a new blue folder. Open that folder and you’ll find the .brushset file, .swatches file and the sketch image we’ll use for this project.

Just tap on the .brushset and .swatches file and it should import automatically to Procreate. You’ll find it in the Palettes tab of your Color Panel. The brushes will be on top of the list in your Brush Library.

Save the sketch file to your Photos app. Open Procreate and from the gallery, look to the upper right corner and tap on Photo. Tap on the sketch file and it will import to Procreate as a new canvas.

Step 1: Import the sketch file provided in the download’s folder. Rename it as “SKETCH”. Then add a layer underneath and rename it as “BACKGROUND”.

Using the Freya Oil Canvas No.1 brush in a light gray color, add the texture to this layer. Then using the Freya Oil Wet No. 11 brush and in a darker purple gray color, paint the surface about ⅓ of the way. Blend the colors using Freya Oil Blender No. 1. Then create a new layer, rename it as “FLOWERS” and start blocking out the colors of your Peony, using the Freya Oil Wet No. 11 brush.

Step 2: On the same FLOWERS layer, use Freya Oil Old Brush No. 2 to build up the colors for the flowers. Add darker oranges for the shadows and lighter orange for the mid tones. There should be shadows were petals naturally fold or overlap. Go back to the BACKGROUND layer and paint a muted yellow background using the same brush. Use Freya Oil Blender No. 3 to blend the colors a bit. It doesn’t have to be perfect yet so don’t worry.

Step 3: Still working on the FLOWERS layer, use the Freya Oil Wet No. 8 brush to define the petals shape. Darker colors for the shadowed areas, lightest color for the highlights.

In this particular painting, the light source is coming from the right. So you’ll notice that the buds facing the right side have more highlights compared to the leaves on the left side. Remember this while working on the shading and highlights. You can turn the sketch file on and off to check that you’re coloring all the areas correctly.

On the BACKGROUND layer, you also start painting the vase and the shadows behind it.

Step 4: In the same FLOWERS layer, add the pollen details using Freya Oil Old Brush No. 5.

Draw the petals veins moving outward using the Freya Oil Wet No. 8.  Add some details like the reflected colors, example some orange tones on leaves or some green tones on the glass vase to reflect the color of the stems. These details add realism to your painting. Use the Freya Oil Tip No. 2 for this.

When you’re happy with your painting, add another layer at the very top and rename it as TOPCOAT. Use the Freya Oil Top Coat No. 2 brush in a light gray color to add another layer of texture to your digital painting.
